Jack's interest in "rocks in the landscape" goes back to a youth spent hiking the Presidential Range in the White Mountains, working as a backpacker for the Appalachian Mountain Club, and weather observer on top of Mt. Washington. Evidence of New England's geological history surrounded him, as he trekked through Tuckerman's Ravine, the Gulf of Slides and Lion's Head. With the worst weather in the world, the summit (even at a puny 6288') was well above timberline, and tiny alpine trees and finally only rock fields decorate the mountain top. |
