About 15-30,000 years earlier, Mt. Washington lay covered a mile deep by the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which moved through New England scouring the bedrock. It lifted stone slabs and scattered them across the region, leaving behind glacial till, boulder fields, and gigantic out-of-place glacial erratics. When Jack moved to Connecticut, he would hike the trails, seeking evidence of this geological past.
