A little farther down the beach, Justice of the Peace Donnie Pendleton takes his ceremonial duties responsibly, being the first to jump clear of the waves and drag the punt up onto the beach so others could arrive without wet feet. He loses his dignity for just a minute, as he sits down at the edge of the beach to dust sand from the soles of his feet. In a few minutes the bride and groom will exchange vows in this very special place, but not before an unexpected shower sweeps in, causing everyone to run for cover. The bride’s poetic musings, written with fountain pen on handmade, imported paper, run to illegibility, leaving blue smudges on the palm of her hand, which she later transfers to her dress. No one notices in the happy confusion that ensues.
